Our image of God matters. What is our experience of God? Is He a God out there in the distance and unknown or a personal intimate God? Is He someone who we think we know but have no relationship with Him? Is He a supernatural being who is a Spirit rather than flesh and blood? Our response makes the difference in terms of whom we worship. Many have made God after their own image. This is a god they have made to benefit self. Many idols are made to symbolise this god. In all of us there is a need to worship someone or some thing beyond ourselves. This need was in us since we were born. How we meet this need is varied depending on what we have been taught or the environment we have grown up in.
God created in us a longing for Himself. He created us to have fellowship with Him. This was the original intent of God. However since the fall, this fellowship has been broken. Now man is left to his own devices to make God according to his image. We were made in God’s image. However since the fall we have been born in man’s image. Now God sent Jesus to restore us to God’s image. We are now a new creation in His image. This is what is called the born-again experience. We were born again in the Spirit so we can worship God in Spirit and in Truth. This is a supernatural transaction.
God is supernatural. He is Spirit and dwells in the third heaven. Yet He is omniscient and dwells within us. This is a mystery. God has made His habitation in us so that we can habitate with Him in heaven. All we have to do is surrender to Him. We are spirit beings on an earthly journey. Our final destination is in heaven with Him. Now, in the spirit, we are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Eph 2:6). Our feet are on the ground on earth. Now we can operate from heaven while on earth and see His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. What a glorious inheritance we have in Jesus.
